Four-Star Films : ‘Strangers on a Train’

To see this--or any other major Alfred Hitchcock film--is to realize that he’s still ahead of the game when it comes to telling a story with a camera, let alone generating suspense without compare. From the moment Robert Walker’s charming psychopath (background) suggests he murder upscale Farley Granger’s troublesome estranged wife and Granger (pictured, with Ruth Roman) in turn kills Walker’s dotty mother, the 1951 classic moves forward swiftly and flawlessly, climaxing in the famous murder scene at the runaway carousel (TNT Friday at 10:15 p.m.).
