BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Veterans Will Sit, Watch the Kids Play

The greatest challenge in Marcel Lachemann’s young managerial career may not be winning games, but simply trying to keep everyone happy.

The Angels have decided that J.T. Snow will be their first baseman until further notice. Jim Edmonds will be the starting left fielder. And as soon as Eduardo Perez is comfortable at third base, he’ll be playing there and Damion Easley will be moved to second.

Just like that, left fielder Dwight Smith finds himself on the trading block, left fielder Bo Jackson is on the bench and, as soon as Perez returns, second basemen Harold Reynolds and Rex Hudler will be there with him.

“It’s mind-boggling,” Smith said, “but this is a business. I’m a veteran, so maybe they think it shouldn’t bother me. But I’m human, too, and I have to handle it as a professional.”

Easley, who was put on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 30 because of a strained right shoulder, will be replaced by Mark Dalesandro, who is being called up from Vancouver.

Pitcher Mark Langston, who left Friday’s start because of a tight left elbow, underwent precautionary X-rays that proved negative. He was found to have a tired arm, and is scheduled to start Wednesday. . . . General Manager Bill Bavasi asked pitcher John Farrell if he would consider returning to triple-A Vancouver when starter Brian Anderson is activated Tuesday. Farrell has yet to make a decision.
