TRACK AND FIELD / NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS : UCLA Sprinter Reed Expelled From Meet

BOISE, Ida. — UCLA sprinter Marcus Reed was disqualified from the meet Saturday and Arkansas distance runner David Welsh also was tossed out of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Louisiana State won its eighth consecutive women’s title with 83 points, to 43 for second-place Texas and 42 for UCLA.

Arkansas was the men’s champion with 83 points, to 45 for Texas El Paso. USC was 10th with 20.

Reed was disqualified for violating what officials called the honest effort rule. The ruling came after he false-started in Friday night’s 200-meter semifinals.

An appeal by UCLA Coach Bob Larsen was rejected, and the penalty was expulsion from the meet, though Reed had qualified for Saturday night’s 100 final.

Welsh, who finished fourth in Friday night’s 10,000 meters, was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct after hitting Penn State’s Mark Wimmer in the head. The incident occurred after Welsh was jostled by Wimmer early in the race.

Arkansas Coach John McDonnell, who sent Welsh home Saturday, said Wimmer provoked the incident, but he didn’t condone his runner’s action.

“He’s got to learn not to do those things,” McDonnell said of Welsh.

In the competition, Holli Hyche’s bid to make track and field history by winning eight consecutive titles was shattered by lightly regarded Merlene Frazer of Texas in the 200.

Hyche, of Indiana State, had won the 55- and 200-meter titles at each of the past two NCAA indoor championships, the outdoor 100 and 200 last year and 100 this year in 11.23 seconds.

Frazer bolted past her with about 60 meters left and won the 200-meter finals in a wind-aided 22.49 seconds.
