Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Religious Group Gets Tax Status Back

A religious group headquartered in a remote wilderness ranch near Yellowstone National Park is celebrating and inviting contributions now that its tax-exempt status has been restored by the Internal Revenue Service. “We rejoice in the opportunity to move forward with publishing and distributing our teachings,” said Elizabeth Clare Prophet, leader of the Church Universal and Triumphant. The church agreed not to store weapons on its property, which includes a large fallout shelter. And it said it was withdrawing its 1992 lawsuit against the IRS, which had revoked the group’s tax exemption starting on May 1, 1987.
