The Amateur Athletic Foundation recently awarded a $100,035 grant to the Ketchum/Downtown YMCA for sports equipment, new lighting and other costs for an athletic field scheduled to be completed this summer at 3rd Street and Lucas Avenue.
The YMCA will transform the vacant lot into a soccer field and supervise recreation programs there. The grant is part of a $1-million fund the foundation established in July, 1992, to finance youth sports programs in areas affected by the riots.
The foundation, a legacy of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, awards grants to youth sports organizations, initiates its own youth sports programs and manages the Paul Ziffren Sports Resource Center Library.
