Food for Thought on Food for Kids

The Southern California Interfaith Hunger Coalition will host an informational meeting Wednesday to increase participation in the Summer Food Service Program for Children.
In California, 1.6 million children participate in the school lunch program. But last year only 137,525 children participated in the summer meal program, according to the group.
The program, funded through the Department of Agriculture, is designed to fill the gap in meals children from low-income families may experience when they are not attending school. The program is for children under 18 and targeted for areas where 50% of students get a free or reduced-price lunch during the school year.
The meeting, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Second Baptist Church, 2412 Griffith Ave., will offer information on program sites and hours and details about the program. The coalition’s Child Nutrition Hotline will also be promoted. The number is (800) EAT-N-GRO.
