Edison sophomores Kerry O’Bric and Marie Philman, finished one-two in the heptathlon competition late Tuesday night at the 16th California high school championships at Mt. San Antonio College.
O’Bric, who finished first in the 100 hurdles (15.8 seconds), 200 meters (26.1) and long jump (17 feet 4 inches), had 4,401 points to 4,309 for Philman, who won the high jump (5-3), shotput (39-3 3/4) and triple jump (127-0).
O’Bric will participate in the triple jump and Philman in the discus at the State track and field championships this weekend at Cerritos College.
University’s Jennifer Stanton finished sixth among the 45 heptathlon competitors with 3,578 points, and Edison’s Erin Zimmon was seventh with 3,479.

Steve Stewart said Wednesday he has been hired as the wrestling coach at Esperanza.
Stewart has coached University the past two seasons and was 34-7-2. The Trojans were 23-2-2 and tied for the Sea View League championship last season.
Stewart was an assistant under Chuck Bishop at Esperanza for seven years before coming to University. Bishop resigned at the end of last season.

Newport Harbor’s Trent Bryson, the 3,200 meters runner-up at the Sea View League track and field championships this season, will attend UC Santa Barbara, Newport Harbor Coach Bim Barry said Wednesday.
