ACLU to Appeal Ruling on Knives at School

SAN FRANCISCO — The American Civil Liberties Union announced Tuesday that it will appeal a federal judge’s ruling that Livingston schools do not have to let Sikh students wear knives called kirpans.
Baptized Sikhs must wear kirpans as part of their religious tradition. But U.S. District Judge Garland E. Burrell of Sacramento ruled Friday that the ceremonial knives would impose an undue disruption of the district’s schools and students.
