LONG BEACH : Reduction in Bixby Park Traffic Proposed
- Share via
The City Council wants to close Bixby Park to through traffic during rush hours and thus reduce the number of drivers who cut through the park and nearby neighborhoods to avoid busy Ocean Boulevard.
Under a proposal introduced by Councilmen Alan S. Lowenthal and Douglas S. Drummond, park gates at 1st Street and Cherry Avenue and 2nd Street and Junipero Avenue would be closed from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekdays. Currently, those gates are closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. every day.
The council voted 7-1 last week to ask the city attorney to draw up an ordinance that would expand the hours that the park would be closed to through traffic.
Councilman Evan Anderson Braude opposed the new hours, saying he was denied a similar request to block traffic in his downtown district. Councilwoman Doris Topsy-Elvord was absent.
