SPI Turns to PR: SPI Pharmaceuticals in Costa Mesa said Wednesday it has hired public relations agency Edelman Medical Communications of New York to give its products higher visibility in the scientific community. In particular, SPI said, it wants to promote its leading drug, Virazole.
The drug--which is sold in 60 countries for treatment of various illnesses, including hepatitis C--is approved for a single use in the United States: as an aerosol to treat infants hospitalized with severe viral respiratory infections.
ICN Pharmaceuticals, which owns a substantial stake in SPI, announced recently that it will seek federal approval to sell Virazole in this country to treat hepatitis C. The disease, which can go undetected for many years, destroys liver function.
