Education: Inglewood to Hold School Lottery

A lottery will be held for students who want to switch schools in Inglewood.
The school board, which used to allow transfers on a first-come, first-served basis, has changed its policy to fit state guidelines on open enrollment.
Students who want to transfer must apply for a permit. All transfers will based on available space at the school, and beginning in the fall, the names of students for open slots will be picked at random, said Joice Bailey Lewis, director of pupil services.
Students who attend their local school will not be displaced by transfer applicants.
Under the new guidelines, applicants who cite hardship as a reason for transfer will no longer be given preferential treatment.
The policy does not apply to those who want to transfer outside of the district.
