Matt Olsen
SCHOOL: Royal
SPORT: Volleyball
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Olsen suffered torn ligaments in his left ankle two days before the start of the season and was sidelined for more than two months. He returned to action six weeks ago and helped Royal win the Southern Section Division II championship in only his second season playing volleyball.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Olsen, a 6-foot-6 opposite hitter, was at his best when it counted most, contributing 38 kills in Saturday’s championship victory against Highland. In the fourth and final game, Royal’s Josh White set the ball to Olsen an astounding 35 times, and Olsen responded with 17 kills. “We told our setter if he set it to anyone else when he had a chance to set it to Olsen, we’d take him out,” Royal Coach Bob Ferguson joked. In Wednesday’s semifinal victory against South Torrance, Olsen had a match-high 17 kills. On Thursday, Olsen signed a letter of intent to play at Brigham Young.
