Hazardous-Waste Disposer Sued by Former Landlord

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Security Environmental Systems Inc., a hazardous-waste disposer, said Friday that it is being sued by the owner of a Vernon warehouse. The company had once hoped to convert the site into a hazardous-waste incinerator.
Under intense community pressure, Security Environmental abandoned plans several years ago to build the medical-waste burner at the Los Angeles County site. The property owner alleges in its suit that Security Environmental owes back rent and did not clean up the site, the company said in a statement.
Security Environmental President Ellen Batzel defended the company, saying that its engineers have left the facility pristine and that city officials are expected to issue a report confirming that.
The company did not comment on the allegations that it owes back rent.
Security Environmental also said that it is being sued for allegedly breaking an oral agreement to pay 250,000 shares of its common stock for services allegedly rendered to the company in 1990.
