THE NEW WORLD ORDER IN DRAWING AND SCULPTURE 1983-1993 by Pat Oliphant (Andrews & McMeel: $12.95; 94 pp., illustrated, paperback original). The program from a touring exhibit, “Order” proves that Oliphant remains one of the wittiest and most influential contemporary political cartoonists. His mordantly funny drawings depict a reunited Germany as Frankenstein’s monster, stitched back together, and unemployed Russians and Americans arguing whether Gorbachev or Bush is less able, in a game of one-downsmanship. The sculpted caricatures, which are really just three-dimensional drawings, seem less interesting than the vivid pen and brush works.
