LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Large Load of ‘3 Strikes’ Cases Filed by Prosecutors

In the first six weeks of the state’s “three strikes” law, Los Angeles County prosecutors filed 152 “third strike” felony cases and 489 “second strike” cases.
Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti, attorneys and judges believe the caseload could overload the county’s legal system by crowding out civil trials and filling up jails.
“Innocent people seeking redress in the courts will be shunted aside because the courts are filled with ‘three strikes’ cases,” Bruce Broillet, Los Angeles Trial Lawyers Assn. president, said this week.
The “three strikes” law mandates a sentence of 25 years to life in prison for third-time felons previously convicted of two previous serious or violent crimes.
