Golden West started the season with four consecutive losses before Scales, from San Clemente High School, moved into the starting lineup at setter. Since then, the Rustlers have won eight of nine, including two key victories last week. On Wednesday Golden West beat defending State champion Irvine Valley, 8-15, 15-8, 15-7, 10-15, 16-14. The Rustlers came back Friday to beat San Diego Mesa, 15-7, 15-7, 15-5. Scales had 135 assists, 23 digs, nine blocks and five aces in the two matches. Golden West needs two victories in its final four matches to clinch a playoff spot.
Other notables:
* Jason Hodges, Cypress, was four for five, including a home run and two doubles, as Cypress beat Golden West, 11-3, Saturday.
