Companies Recant Environmental Claims: Two makers of transparent tape and plastic tableware have agreed to stop making environmental claims for their products. LePage’s Inc. of Pittsburgh agreed to settle a Federal Trade Commission challenge of its claims that its tape is biodegradable and that the plastic tape dispenser and its cardboard backing are recyclable, the FTC said. The company claimed that its tape, made from wood pulp, would break down and return to nature in a short time, which the commission contends is not true. Oak Hill Industries Corp. of New York faced similar problems with its claim that its plastic plates, bowls and utensils could be recycled.
