The Seattle SuperSonics posted their NBA-best 60th victory Saturday, defeating the Houston Rockets, 100-97, at Seattle.
“There’s a nice history to winning 60 games,” Coach George Karl said. “Only 35 teams have ever done it. To do it against Houston is even more important.”
Shawn Kemp had 22 points and 17 rebounds and Gary Payton added 21 points as the SuperSonics became the 36th team in league history to win as many as 60 games in a season. They won their fifth in a row and 14th in 15 games.
Of the 35 clubs to have won 60 games, 17 went on to win the NBA championship. The 1991-92 Chicago Bulls were the last team to win 60 games en route to the NBA title.
The SuperSonics moved within one victory--or a Houston loss--of getting home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
Hakeem Olajuwon scored 31 points and Vernon Maxwell 30 for the Rockets, who have 56 victories and the league’s second-best record. The Rockets had a six-game winning streak ended.
Atlanta 123, Philadelphia 94--Andrew Lang matched his season high with 20 points at Atlanta, including eight during a decisive 26-8 first-half run, to help the Hawks take over first place in the Eastern Conference.
The Hawks’ 12th victory in 15 games and fourth in a row moved them a half-game ahead of New York and one game ahead of Chicago in the race for the best record in the conference.
Phoenix 96, San Antonio 94--Charles Barkley scored 26 points and Kevin Johnson had 16 points and 16 assists to lead the Suns at Phoenix.
A.C. Green, who scored 23 points, gave the Suns the lead for good with a three-point play with 1:38 left. The Spurs’ Negele Knight missed a three-pointer with 4.1 seconds left, and Willie Anderson’s reverse layup rimmed out at the buzzer. David Robinson had 39 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists for San Antonio.
Golden State 109, Utah 105--Chris Mullin scored 28 points and Latrell scored 18 of his 25 in the fourth quarter as the Warriors won at Oakland to give Don Nelson his 800th coaching victory.
Sacramento 106, Dallas 98--Spud Webb scored 26 points to lead the Kings at Dallas.
Cleveland 91, Milwaukee 90--Chris Mills’ rebound basket at the buzzer gave the Cavaliers the victory at Milwaukee.
