COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West’s Ward Gets 300th Victory

Golden West Coach Betsy Ward gained her 300th softball victory when the Rustlers upset first-place Fullerton, 2-0, in an Orange Empire Conference game Friday at Fullerton.
The Rustler’s two runs came in the 10th inning after Teresa Pinkerton’s fielder’s choice scored Beth Borowski, and Shelly Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to score Dawn Stewart.
Stewart, who was two for four, made a pivotal catch to keep Fullerton scoreless late in the game.
Golden West improved to 7-21, 2-11; Fullerton dropped to 21-13, 11-3.
In another Orange Empire Conference game:
Cypress 4, Orange Coast 3--Alison Murphy singled home Kathy Shirley in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Cypress, snapping Orange Coast’s 10-game winning streak.
Murphy had three hits and Kelsi Armbruster and Tami Dowlin each added two for Cypress (33-14, 9-5). Orange Coast fell to 24-11-2, 11-3.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:
Saddleback 127, El Cajon Grossmont 108--Trevor Rodin won the 200 butterfly (2:12.0) and 500 free (5:02.55) for visiting Saddleback (4-2).
In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:
Saddleback 173, Grossmont 62--Jennifer Greenfield won three events for Saddleback (4-2) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay. Greenfield won the 200 freestyle (2:05.47), the 50 freestyle (26.43) and the 100 freestyle (58.17). Alisa Burden also won three events, the 200 individual medley (2:36.26), the 50 breaststroke (37.14), the 500 freestyle (6:07.17) and swam on the relay.
In men’s nonconference volleyball:
Golden West 3, San Diego Mesa 0--Gregory Reitz had 17 kills, Brian Gordon had five service aces and Aaron Brown added 12 digs to lead Golden West, 15-7, 15-7, 15-5.
