TRIPLE DUTY

Malika Edmonson of St. Bernard High anchored the Vikings’ 400-meter relay team to victory with a time of 47.74 seconds in the seeded race of the Arcadia Invitational last Saturday.

The freshman also finished third in the 400 in 55.63 in a race won by Monique Hennagan of Spring Valley, S.C., who finished in a meet-record 52.87.

Edmonson also ran a leg on St. Bernard’s 1,600-meter relay team, which was fourth in 3 minutes 51.22 seconds.

In the boys’ competition, a strong 1,600-meter anchor leg by Peter Gilmore paced the Palisades’ distance medley relay team to a second-place finish in 10:25.05.

The Fairfax boys’ team was fourth in the seeded 400 relay in 42.43.

SIGNING

It has been a long time since the Fairfax boys’ basketball team had a standout such as former Lions Chris Mills or Sean Higgins, but they still managed to produce Division I prospects.

Terryl Woolery, a 6-foot-4 transfer from Los Angeles, was the latest Lion to get a scholarship. Woolery will remain a Lion, only he will play for Loyola Marymount in the fall.

REUNION

The Beverly Hills baseball team will hold a triple-header alumni baseball game April 23 at La Cienega Park.

The triple-header begins with an alumni game at 2 p.m. That game will be followed by 1976-84 alumni versus the Norman varsity at 4 p.m.

The third game will feature 1985-93 teams coached by Bill Erickson against the varsity at 7 p.m.

Some of the noted alumni expected to compete include Tony Clark, Bobby Kay and Albie Silvera.

Jerry Jones from the class of 1937 is also expected to compete.

“We usually have 50 to 60 guys show up for this thing,” Erickson said.

POWER SHORTAGE

Santa Monica’s Heather Marshak pitched a three-hitter, striking out six against Peninsula. In most softball games, Marshak would expect to earn a victory.

The area’s top-seeded team, however, lost to Peninsula, 1-0, Thursday and dropped to No. 2 in this week’s poll.

“No one is hitting, that’s the problem,” Santa Monica Coach Debbie Skaggs said. “We’ve had no offensive power in the last three games.”

The Vikings’ top power hitters--second baseman Nicole Garland and catcher Michele Millard--are in slumps. Skaggs is hopeful they will regain their form when the Vikings play three games against Inglewood.

Another outstanding pitcher this season has been Lisa Forst of Brentwood, who pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 in a 11-1 victory over Delphic League rival Campbell Hall.

Forst, a right-handed freshman, throws a ball that rises.

“She ranks among our top pitchers at Brentwood,” Coach Penny Baizer said.

The Eagles are 3-6 overall and 1-0 in league.

BACK TO FORM

The Santa Monica baseball team needed a strong pitching performance from Frankie Gomez to snap a two-game losing streak in last week’s San Luis Obispo tournament.

Gomez was scheduled to face a hard-hitting El Segundo team. Talk about pitching out of trouble.

Gomez, however, was undaunted, pitching a complete game to beat El Segundo, 5-3.

“He made them hit the ball on the ground and we made the plays,” Santa Monica Coach Pete McKellar said.

Gomez’s performance woke up a sleepy club.

“I think that game will be the turning point of the season,” McKellar said. “We played fundamentally sound. We moved runners along the bases and guys came up with big hits when we needed them. It was one of the better games we’ve played this season. After two losses, it was good to get a win against El Segundo.”

The Vikings will be tested this week with two games against Inglewood and one against Peninsula.

CAN’T BE STOPPED

St. Bernard leadoff hitter Dana Harrison continues to be on a hitting streak. Harrison went six for 10 with four stolen bases last week against tournament host St. Paul and La Mirada.

Harrison has 23 hits in 48 at-bats for a .479 average with 20 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.

“He is the fastest man on earth,” Coach Bob Yarnall said. “He turns a routine ground ball to shortstop and legs it out for a hit.”

MORE HONORS

St. Bernard’s talented forward Olympia Scott was selected to the Southern Section girls’ super team for the second consecutive season, the Amateur Athletic Foundation announced.

Scott, a 6-2 senior, was one of 10 players selected to the team.

Also chosen were Timicha Kirby of Lynwood, Mimi McKinney of Peninsula, Michelle Giordano of Buena, Shannon Perry of Cerritos, Samantha Rigley of Alemany, Nicole Erickson of Brea-Olinda, Kristi Rohr of Santa Ynez, Carly Funicello of Alemany and Sara Hagemann of Crescenta Valley.

Scott, who averaged 18.8 points and 15 rebounds, was the Southern Section Division IV player of the year.
