The quake-damaged Santa Monica Freeway--the nation’s busiest--opened Monday, less than three months after the Jan. 17 earthquake. Here is a numerical look at some key repair features:
* $29.7 million: Total construction cost, including bonuses.
* $14.9 million: Original bid amount for completion in 140 days.
* $14.8 million: Bonus paid to the contractor, C. C. Myers Inc., for completing the project in slightly more than half the time originally projected.
* $8 million: Net profit for C. C. Myers, headquartered in Rancho Cordova, Calif., after paying for extra crews and equipment and overtime.
* 6 million: Pounds of steel used in construction.
* $1 million: Lost in production and wages each day from traffic delays, according to a study by the governor’s Office of Planning and Research.
* 600,000: Pounds or 17,000 linear feet of 12-by-12 timbers used during building.
* 341,000: Average number of vehicles that travel the Santa Monica Freeway each day.
* 20,000: Cubic yards of structural concrete poured.
* 1,000: Construction workers, including 228 carpenters, 134 ironworkers and four superintendents, who worked 12-hour shifts on the project.
* 66: Days needed for repair work, which began Feb. 5 and was completed 74 days ahead of schedule.
