SANTA CLARITA — A prisoner was stabbed in the chest with a knife made from a razor blade after a fight broke out in a lockup while he was waiting to appear in court, authorities said Tuesday.
More than a dozen black and Latino inmates fought in a racially motivated brawl at Newhall Municipal Court about noon Monday. No deputies were hurt during the two-minute incident, said a sheriff’s deputy.
The injured inmate, James Jaspar, 29, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia. He was treated for stab wounds to the chest and returned to the County Jail.
Two other inmates, Patrick Contreras, 19, and Edward Espinoza, 22, were booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
