Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Engineers Repair Faulty Shuttle Radar

Engineers working frantically on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean fixed a broken radar on the space shuttle Endeavour, and the instrument was operating perfectly, the Kennedy Space Center reported. The fix will allow the shuttle to create an unprecedented three-dimensional map of Earth’s mountains, volcanoes, forests, deserts, oceans and rivers. After tedious testing, engineers in Europe and at the Johnson Space Center in Houston had traced the problem to a bad sensor in a low-voltage safety circuit inside the high-power amplifier for one of the radars.
