Gray Becomes Third Recruit to Pick CSUN for Basketball

Eric Gray, a 6-foot-6 forward from Canada College in Redwood City, Calif., has orally committed to accept a basketball scholarship to Cal State Northridge.
Gray, accurate from long range, is the third recruit to choose Northridge. Reseda High guard Trenton Cross and Thousand Oaks High center Paul Brandt signed with the Matadors in November.
Gray averaged 19.9 points and seven rebounds for Canada, which finished 17-13, 10-6 in the Coast Conference. In conference play, he made 40 of 99 three-point attempts. He scored more than 30 points three times, with a high of 38.
Northridge coaches privately have compared Gray to Keith Gibbs, the Matadors’ scoring leader in the 1991-92 season.
Like Gibbs, Gray chose Northridge over mostly small-college competition.
“I wanted to play Division I,” said Gray, who also was courted by Cal Poly Pomona and UC Davis. “Plus, I wanted to go back to Southern California so my parents could see me play.”
Gray grew up in Twentynine Palms, where his family still resides.
Bowling
Eric Forkel of Chatsworth lost his only match in Saturday’s stepladder finals to finish in third place in the $250,000 BPAA U.S. Open bowling tournament in Troy, Mich.
Forkel, who qualified second, was defeated by Parker Bohn III, 228-202.
Basketball
Jordan O’Gilvie scored 13 points, including all six of his team’s points in overtime, as Tarzana Bantam defeated Woodland Hills, 42-39, to win the boys’ 10-year-old division Valley regional championship of the Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department. T.J. Stephens led Tarzana with 17 rebounds and 10 points.
