Hotel Maid’s Reward Should Be Greater

* I could not believe what I was reading in “Only Scruples Stop Housekeeper From Cleaning Up,”(March 31).
Ms. Shirley Rich Wagner (vacationing from Bel Air) did not have the common sense to store her valuables in a hotel security safe, but instead left them behind a drape?
Four hundred dollars and a kiss for this honest person to receive as a reward for $100,000 in jewelry is pittance.
The least she could have done for this deed was to buy a small new car for Maria Jimenez to commute to school or pay a year’s tuition for her.
Let’s see Ms. Wagner live for one week on $6.10 an hour and walk in Maria’s shoes.

* I have just finished reading the article about the housekeeper finding the jewels in one of the hotel rooms and returning them.
Any trusted employee would certainly do that, but there are those who wouldn’t.
I personally think the $400 reward is an insult for having your $100,000 worth of jewels returned. And then a “great big kiss.” Yuck.
Ten percent of the value would make much more sense of gratification.
