FUNICULAR RAILWAYS: From Angels Flight to Shasta Springs by Joseph Campbell (Borden Publishing, 2623 San Fernando Road, Los Angeles, Calif. 90065: $5.50; 86 pp., illustrated, paperback original). In this genial little book, Campbell reveals that more of these vanished railways existed than many Angelenos realize: In addition to Angels Flight, Court Flight ran in downtown L.A., another railway climbed Mt. Washington and a third ran on Santa Catalina. In Northern California, funiculars served mining and lumbering installations, carried tourists to scenic views and gave rise to the San Francisco cable cars. Illustrated with charming old photographs and postcards, this attractive book is marred only by some typographical errors.
