Airline to Eliminate Employee Weight Standards: USAir flight attendants won’t need to choose between losing a few pounds or losing their jobs. The airline agreed to drop its weight standards to settle a 1992 lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said the airline and the Assn. of Flight Attendants, AFL-CIO. Attendants will be required to meet new performance standards instead to be sure they can perform their jobs, a USAir spokeswoman said. Weight standards could be restored in three years, but only after negotiations with the union, said Nancy Segal, a union staff attorney. The suit accused Piedmont Aviation Inc., which merged with USAir in 1987, of discriminating against women in enforcing the standards.
