BUFFER ZONE: Officials today will hold a celebration at Olivas Adobe Park in honor of Ventura County’s newest greenbelt, a 4,575-acre stretch of farmland between Oxnard and Ventura. . . . The coastal greenbelt represents the sixth such buffer zone established in the county. . . . So what do you do at a greenbelt celebration? “It’s more ceremonial than anything else,” city of Ventura planner Pat Richardson said. “But I think there will be cookies and punch.”
UNION RALLY: Farm workers today plan to protest a reduced sentence for a Somis flower rancher originally charged with enslaving his laborers. . . . A U. S. district judge Monday changed the three-year prison sentence of Edwin M. Ives to one year in a halfway house and two years of house arrest under electronic surveillance. . . . “It sends a message that it’s OK to abuse farm workers without fear of going to jail,” said Martin Vasquez, regional manager for the United Farm Workers union.
DENMARK’S LIST: County officials Tuesday marked the 50th anniversary of Denmark’s refusal to turn over its Jewish population to the Nazis (B1). . . . Three local children took part in a nationwide letter-writing campaign to the queen of Denmark, whose grandfather led the resistance. . . . “I think that your grandfather and all of the other people who helped to rescue the Jewish people, our ancestors, were very courageous,” wrote 13-year-old Mia Bortolussi of Ventura.
SMART PAGES: In conjunction with a countywide recycling program, the new telephone books are out and headed to a doorstep near you. Locally, Pacific Bell is distributing more than 300,000 copies of its yellow-and-black Smart Yellow Pages. . . . New feature this year: Government listings featuring a photo, phone number and address of elected officials from the President to state representatives. . . . “I even tried the number at the White House just to make sure it works,” Pacific Bell spokeswoman Nancy Swasey said.
