A light plane crashed Tuesday night in a patch of rugged chaparral on Santa Catalina Island, killing at least one occupant and igniting a quarter-acre brush fire that was visible for miles, authorities said.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Burt Lyon said the crash was reported at 7:11 p.m. in the Big Springs area of the island about 3 1/2 miles west of the Catalina-Avalon Airport. A woman’s body was found in the Cessna’s wreckage two hours later as paramedics searched for survivors.
The Big Springs area is in the center of land owned by the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy. The cause of the crash was not immediately determined.
