TENNIS ROUNDUP : Sampras Beats Roux for Fifth Title in ’94

Top-seeded Pete Sampras defeated French qualifier Lionel Roux, 6-2, 6-2, Sunday to win the $650,000 Salem Open in Osaka Japan, for his fifth victory this season.
Sampras, ranked No. 1 in the world, quickly took control, breaking Roux’s serve in the third and seventh games of the first set on the hard courts.
Roux managed to keep serve in the lengthy first game of the second set, winning the game with four aces. But Sampras broke in the fifth and seventh games, and won the last game at love in the 1-hour, 23-minute match.

Conchita Martinez defeated Natalia Zvereva to win her first Family Circle Magazine Cup title in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Martinez, No. 3 in the world, won the final eight games of the match for a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
It was the first title of 1994 for Martinez, who won five tournaments last year.
