COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans, UC Santa Barbara Split Baseball Doubleheader

Cal State Fullerton’s Mike Parisi and UC Santa Barbara’s Steve Lane pitched complete-game victories as the No. 1-ranked Titans and the Gauchos split a Big West baseball doubleheader Saturday at Fullerton. The Titans won the first game, 11-0, and Santa Barbara took the second, 4-2.
Parisi (7-1) gave up only two singles and one walk in an 8-0 victory. The shutout was his third of the season.
Bret Hemphill and Adam Millan each had three hits for the Titans, and Jack Jones had three runs batted in. Millan and Jeff Ferguson each hit home runs in the eighth for Fullerton.
Starter Jared Janke took the loss for Santa Barbara.
In the second game, Matt Bazzani led the Gauchos. He had a two-run homer in the fourth inning and tripled and scored in the eighth inning.
Fullerton is 25-6 and 4-1 in conference. Santa Barbara is 14-18, 4-1.
The teams will complete their three-game series at 1 p.m. today at Titan Field.
In intercollegiate track and field:
Fullerton men win--Greg Thawes won the 100 meters (10.92) and the 200 meters (22.12) to lead Cal State Fullerton to its first victory since the program was reinstated in 1989. The Titans (59 points) finished four points ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara. UC Irvine finished fourth with 35 points.
The Anteaters’ David Mayeda, who usually competes in the 400-meter hurdles, won the 400 (48.55).
Irvine women a distant second--Laura Monson won the 3,000 (9:59.7) and Pam Kurtela won the 200 (25.07) as UC Irvine tied Santa Barbara for second place with 45 points. Long Beach State finished first with 72 points.
Monson has won all four 3,000 races she has competed in this year.
Cal State Fullerton finished fourth with six points.
