At least 2 million gallons of Iranian crude oil spilled into the sea, forming a slick two miles long, after two tankers collided near the entrance to the Persian Gulf, shipping sources said. There were no casualties nor signs of fire, the sources and a port official said. The accident occurred late Wednesday in the Gulf of Oman, 9.5 miles off the coast of Fujairah, one of the United Arab Emirates. The spill was contained by noon Thursday, the port official said. The cause of the collision was being investigated. The Panamanian-registered Seki collided with the U.A.E.-registered Baynunah. The Seki’s agents said it was carrying 76.5 million gallons of Iranian light crude destined for Japan.
