Making Students Serve Community
* I applaud the community service requirement for high school students of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District.
A Colorado school district in which I taught many years ago pioneered such a program. Psychology, sociology and other senior students served as aides two hours a week during their final quarter in local elementary schools, in nursing homes and in schools for the retarded and handicapped. Our senior students found it an extremely rewarding and enlightening real-world experience--long before President Bush’s “thousand points of light.”
I am at a loss to understand why two SVUSD trustees apparently oppose such an excellent opportunity to expose our soon-to-be-graduates to the importance of moral responsibility in a free society.
