When You See These, Smile

“The Classic Westerns” runs from Wednesday to Sept. 6 at Laemmle’s Monica in Santa Monica. “The Searchers” plays from Wednesday to July 1, and the rest of the series shows only on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 11.

Stagecoach (1939). The granddaddy of the modern Western, starring John Wayne and directed by John Ford. July 3-4.

The Westerner (1940). Starring Gary Cooper, with an Oscar-winning performance by Walter Brennan as Judge Roy Bean. July 10-11.

Pursued (1947). A dark, brooding, malevolent film noir Western featuring a stolid Robert Mitchum and directed by Raoul Walsh. July 17-18.

Shane (1953). Heroes and villains writ very large, with Jack Palance memorable as the man in black. July 24-25.

Red River (1948). A brawny cattle-drive Western explodes as Wayne goes toe-to-toe with, of all people, Montgomery Clift. July 31-Aug. 1.

Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957). Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas walk us through that celebrated shootout. Aug. 7-8.

Ride the High Country (1962). Aging gunfighters Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea come to grips with their own mortality in this splendid Sam Peckinpah film. Aug. 14-15.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). Wayne and Jimmy Stewart co-star in Ford’s last great Western, a beautifully modulated piece about the fading of youth and idealism and the persistence of legend and romance. Simply wonderful. Aug. 21-22.

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973). A different but violent look at the legendary confrontation, directed by Peckinpah once again. Aug. 28-29.

Once Upon a Time in the West. The signature three-hour Western from Sergio Leone, the man who reinvented the form. Sept. 4-6.
