THE WINGLESS CROW by Charles Fergus (Lyons & Burford: $14.95; 188 pp.). The warm, personal essays in this anthology were originally published in Pennsylvania Game News. Fergus recounts the pleasures of exploring the Eastern woods: hiking, hunting, fishing or just sitting on a stump. With a naturalist’s eye, he describes animals, plants and people shaped by their love for the wilds. His understated prose is delightfully free of self-righteous posturing and suggests an informal chat with a knowledgeable friend.
