A sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 17-year-old during a foot chase Friday night in Walnut Park, an unincorporated area just south of Huntington Park, authorities and witnesses said.
The shooting occurred about 7:15 p.m. while the youth was on the roof of a back-yard shed at 2426 Cudahy St. He was identified by a family member as Roman Romo.
The deputy was not hurt, Sheriff’s Deputy Benita Hinojos said.
Deputies had been sent to the 2400 of block of Broadway after a resident reported someone with a gun in the parking lot of a Farm Boys market about a block away.
Deputies said they confronted the gunman and chased him over some back-yard fences to Cudahy Street, where he pointed the gun at them and they shot him to death. They said the suspect’s gun was recovered.
However, a witness who identified himself as longtime friend of the deceased told a KCAL-TV Channel 9 reporter that the teen-ager was unarmed.
