From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Former presidents would lose their taxpayer-funded office allowances after five years under a provision adopted by the House. The cutoff would not apply retroactively to the former presidents who now get the benefit, at a combined cost of more than $2 million a year. They would have five years more, and then lose the benefit. For next year, the government estimates that the office allowances would amount to $633,408 for Ronald Reagan, $462,600 for George Bush, $334,602 for Richard Nixon, $320,606 for Jimmy Carter and $317,164 for Gerald R. Ford.
