Taiwan Seeks 12 Lockheed C-130Hs: The Defense Department said the nation wants to buy the Lockheed Corp. transport planes for $620 million. Also included would be six spare engines, spare and repair parts, and support and logistics equipment. The Pentagon favors the transaction, which is being handled by the Air Force. This foreign military sale is complicated by international politics because the United States does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. When Washington recognized China’s government in 1979, official relations with Taiwan ended. Unofficially, the U.S.-Taiwan relationship has flourished through private organizations established in both countries.
