THE WORD ON WHAT’S HIP AND WHAT’S HYPE

Family Ties
Hey kids! Don’t give Dad just any odd, ordinary tie. (Remember, how quickly he forgot the one you gave him last year?) Why not give him one he can remember, one everyone will remember, one that says “look at me, I’m a cool dad.” At all county Nordstrom stores this Saturday and Sunday, you can buy a blank white silk tie for $10. Nordstrom supplies the paints so you can personalize it. And all proceeds from your purchase will benefit pediatric cardiology efforts at the Childrens Hospital of Orange County.
Nub to Snub
Hairstylist Kenneth Michaels of Christopher & Co. in Corona del Mar deems those short ponytails sported by men trying to be hip as “little artsy fartsy nubs that are overdone.” Adds Michaels, whose luxurious tresses cascade past his shoulders: “If you’re working toward long hair, fine. But if that’s all you’re going to do, why bother? It looks awful. Just cut it off and slick it back.”
Tool Time
Men and power tools--reality or TV sitcom? Whatever the hard truth, the theme has catapulted ABC’s “Home Improvement” to the top of the ratings. It has also prompted Bullock’s to open an in-store Home Improvement shop. The new line includes Tees ($15) with “macho” slogans and caps ($10) and boxers ($15) with the show’s logo. For the day job, there’s polyester ties ($20) featuring screwdrivers and bent nails. The shop also sells a men’s fragrance packaged in a tool box and other hardware goodies. “They’re the perfect gifts for dads who like to fix things, and they send a cute and subtle message to those who don’t,” says a spokeswoman.
Going Off the Cuff
Why settle for the same goes-with-everything cuff links and stud? Men can accessorize according to their mood with Cartier’s new Batonnets series. Augment links of white or yellow gold with bars of crystal, gold, amourette wood or semi-precious stones. Links also come twisted in both metals or encrusted with diamonds. “Cartier is known for its transformable jewelry,” says spokesman Brian Lange, “so these fit that concept. We create products that are whimsical, that people want to wear for the pure pleasure of it.” But variety doesn’t come cheap. Expect to pay $650 to $950 for the links and $300 to $1,650 for the interchangeable bars.
