COSTA MESA — A 27-year-old man struck by a car while crossing the street unexpectedly died of his injuries Wednesday, police said.
Mark Edward Rickbell of Irvine was initially thought to have only suffered two broken legs in the accident, which occurred about 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Sunflower Avenue.
Rickbell, who had cerebral palsy, was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana after the accident, said Costa Mesa traffic investigator Steve Rautus.
“He was alert and had been taken out of intensive care because he was doing well,” Rautus said. “But he started having complications.”
An exact cause of death is not yet known, but Rautus said hospital tests showed that Rickbell had bleeding in the area of his brain.
Witnesses to the accident said Rickbell was crossing Harbor Boulevard against a red light and was not inside a crosswalk when he was hit. The driver of the car was not cited.
