STANTON : Card Club Foes Plan Victory Celebration
- Share via
The organizers of the campaign to defeat Measure A, which would have allowed card clubs in the city, are planning a victory celebration on Saturday at the Stanton Neighborhood Center.
The measure was defeated by a 4-to-1 margin in a special election held June 8.
Councilman Harry M. Dotson and former Councilman David J. Shawver organized volunteers to distribute literature that warned of a connection between card clubs and crime.
“We didn’t have the money to send stuff out in the mail,” Dotson said.
Shawver’s Committee for Community Pride and Forward Vision, which opposed Measure A, spent a little more than $2,000 and relied heavily on volunteers, Dotson said.
“I’m just going to tell them thank you,” Dotson said. “Their time and effort was appreciated.”
The celebration will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
