Mystery Illness May Have Five Cases in Northern California

SAN FRANCISCO — Health officials say there are up to five unconfirmed Northern California victims of the mystery illness that has caused up to 16 deaths in the Four Corners region of the Southwest.
Two of the possible victims being investigated by the state Department of Health were hospitalized in Northern California and on ventilators. Of the other three reported by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, two had died and one is missing.
Scott Lewis, a health department spokesman, could not confirm the ages or genders of the possible victims, nor their locations. The state was awaiting confirmation of the cases from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Lewis said.
The CDC reported Tuesday it was investigating a 16th death possibly related to the illness. There have been 30 confirmed cases of the illness.
