ABUJA, Nigeria — Billionaire publisher Moshood K.O. Abiola has built a strong lead in the race to become Nigeria’s first civilian president in a decade, partial returns showed Monday.
Abiola, one of two candidates groomed by the military dictatorship to lead Africa’s most populous nation, won 11 of Nigeria’s 30 states, compared to one for rival millionaire businessman Bashir Tofa.
That was based on partial official returns compiled on a huge board set up outside the National Electoral Commission in Abuja, the administrative capital.
The election was held Saturday, but final results from all the states are not expected until today or Wednesday. Votes were being counted by hand.
