A would-be carjacker was foiled Saturday night when the key to the car he was trying to steal broke off in the lock, police said.
Police Sgt. Ron Gillett said a gunman approached a man about 9:50 p.m. in the parking lot outside Toys R Us in the 1100 block of South Harbor Boulevard, near Orangethorpe Avenue.
The gunman threatened the victim and demanded his car keys, Gillett said. The victim dropped his keys and ran. The gunman picked up the keys and inserted one in the lock of the car door, but when he tried to open it, the key broke off in the lock, Gillett said.
The gunman fled.
