From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Hashemi Rafsanjani won a second four-year term as president with a low-turnout vote that underlined the waning popularity of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s Islamic revolution. Final results gave the 58-year-old cleric 63.2% of the vote compared with 94.5% in the 1989 elections. In a still more disappointing result for Iran’s Islamic leaders, only 57.6% of the 29 million eligible voters went to the polls despite their appeals for a massive turnout as an act of confidence in the revolution.
