Countywide : Freeway Interchange Suddenly Closed
- Share via
Without warning, the California Department of Transportation on Friday closed the connector ramp from the northbound Santa Ana Freeway to the northbound Costa Mesa Freeway due to interchange reconstruction work.
Traffic was backed up for brief periods, but a detour was available, Caltrans officials said.
The ramp closure started at 11 a.m. Friday and is expected to continue until noon Sunday, Caltrans engineers said.
Caltrans officials recommended that motorists exit the Santa Ana Freeway at 4th Street and travel east on 4th Street until reaching the 4th Street on-ramp to the northbound Costa Mesa Freeway.
The project is part of the massive Santa Ana Freeway widening effort, which is being done in stages.
Caltrans officials said that construction contractors sometimes fail to inform them of the need to close lanes or ramps until the day they start the work.
