Alhambra : Latino Bloc Fights Tax Shift

Latino lawmakers led by Assemblyman Richard Polanco (D-Los Angeles) have voiced their support for the fight by San Gabriel Valley cities against the governor’s proposal to shift more property tax revenue from local government to the state.
Polanco, whose district includes portions of north Los Angeles and Hollywood, and eight other Latino legislators say they will vote as a bloc against Gov. Pete Wilson’s 1993-94 budget proposal to take another $2.6 billion from local government to finance education.
The Caucus made its announcement of support for the cities Friday in Alhambra.
Alhambra has filed a lawsuit against the state to get back the $1.3 billion in property tax revenue the state took from local government last year. Seventy-six cities have voiced their support along with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and various statewide city organizations for Alhambra’s lawsuit.
Polanco said the Latino Caucus represents 10% of the votes in the Assembly. San Gabriel Valley Assembly members Diane Martinez (D-Rosemead) and Hilda Solis (D-El Monte) are part of the caucus.
The caucus expects to present alternative cuts to the state budget in the Assembly budget committee Tuesday.
