Check Printer Announces First Layoffs: Deluxe Corp. said it will institute the first layoffs in its 78-year history, cutting about 500 of its 10,300 check-printing division employees by next spring. Another 375 division employees will be transferred as the Shoreview, Minn.-based company closes 16 of its 60 check-printing facilities nationwide over the next nine months. Deluxe said it will name the locations to be closed in about a week, after employees are notified. Deluxe said the layoffs are the result of poor results this year for its check-printing business, as well as productivity increases that allow far fewer people to be used.
