GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Two men have been arrested in Tijuana on suspicion of involvement in the drug-related slaying here last week of a Cardinal Juan Posadas Ocampo, archbishop of Guadalajara, officials said Monday.
The suspects, identified as Juan Vascones (The Puma) Hernandez and Ramon Torres (Spookey) Mendez, admitted being hired by members of Mexico’s powerful Tijuana drugs cartel to kill the leaders of the rival Sinaloa cartel.
They did not admit to taking part in the cardinal’s killing but said they were involved in the gun battle, which left a total of seven people dead, the officials said.
