JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Louisiana State and South Carolina, a pair of Top 10 teams with explosive passing attacks, square off today in the Gator Bowl.
The nation’s youngest major college coach, Mike Archer, 34, guided seventh-ranked LSU to a 9-1-1 record, while South Carolina’s 8-3 record left the Gamecocks ranked ninth.
The game will showcase two of the hottest young quarterbacks in the nation.
South Carolina’s Todd Ellis is on target to become the NCAA’s all-time passing yardage leader if he maintains his present pace. The 6-foot 3-inch, 210-pound sophomore already has thrown for 5,922 yards and 30 touchdowns.
During the season, Ellis threw an average of 35 passes a game, while LSU’s Tom Hodson averaged 24 passes.
The 6-3, 195-pound Hodson, who is also a sophomore, has connected on 60.9% of his passes, throwing for 4,386 yards and 34 touchdowns in his first two seasons.
